Threading Zoo

A colorful collection of threading games for 1-4 players ages 3-8.
Author: Bernhard Schmid, Illustrations: Antje Flad
Length of the game: each game approx. 10 minutes
The animals in the HABA Zoo have discovered a new favorite
game, animal threading! They want to connect all the zoo
dwellers in a long line. First they wrap the green rope around
the toddling penguins, then round the snout of Carl the
crocodile and finally tie it to the long trunk of
elephant Enzo when Camel Conrad comes round
the corner … - and to everybody's
amusement- gets all tangled up in the end of
the vine.
Would you like to join in the game of threading the HABA zoo animals?
Contents

4 threading strings*, 1 color die, 1 die with dots
Set of game instructions.
*Before starting to play, tie a knot at the end of each string.
Dear Parents,
This game collection offers a number of game ideas and activities related to
threading
• free play
• threading following a template
• color die game
• quick die rolling game
We wish you and your child lots of fun playing and threading!
Sincerely,
Your inventors of playthings

1. Free Play

This variation is an excellent training for the improvement of your child's motor skills.
Your child reaches out for the game material, which is especially made for small hands,
and threads the different wooden figures on the string.
Play with your child! Talk to your child about the animals in the game and the colors and
shapes of the other wooden pieces thus fostering language and auditory skills as well as
increasing the enjoyment of playing.

2. Threading following a picture model

Have your child choose any picture template and thread the sequence as shown.
• The four templates with a yellow background each show 8 wooden figures. Up to four
children can thread at the same time following these templates.
• The picture models with a green background are more complex and should be
threaded by one child at a time.
Join in threading! Take a look with your child at the picture models, but also begin to
show him the infinite variety of other pretty sequences that can be threaded. As a result
you will stimulate your child's imagination and share with them the greater enjoyment of
playing.

3. Color Die Game

Who will have copied the threading sequence of his template first?
A motley color die game for 2-4 players.

Preparation

Put all wooden pieces in the center of the table. Each player takes a string and chooses a
template with a yellow background. Keep both items in front of you.
Get ready the color die. Any extra game material is returned to the game box.

How to Play

Play in a clockwise direction. Whoever has most recently seen a monkey, starts the game.
If you cannot agree, the youngest player starts and rolls the die.
Does the die show the same color as the next wooden piece to be threaded on
the string?
• Yes?
Well done! Take a wooden piece of that color from the center and thread it on your
string.
• No?
Pity! You cannot thread anything.

Then it's the turn of the next player to roll the die.

End of the game

The game ends as soon as a player has finished copying the template thus winning the
game.

4. Quick Die Game

Who has the longest threaded zoo?
A quick die rolling game for 2-4 players.

Preparation

Put all the wooden pieces in the center of the table. Each player takes a string and a
template. Put it with the side showing an animal enclosure face-up in front of you. Take
any three wooden pieces from the center and place them in your enclosures. Get the die
with dots ready. Remaining game material is returned to the game box.

How to Play

Play in a clockwise direction. Whoever has been most recently been to the zoo, may
start. If you cannot agree, the smallest one starts and rolls the die.
On the die appears:
• the threading symbol?
Great! Yell “threading zoo”. Then try to thread as many pieces from your enclosure on
to your string. You can go on threading until another player rolls the symbol and yells
“threading zoo” or there are no more pieces left in your enclosure.
Important: If there are no wooden pieces left in your enclosure you can join the
others rolling the die.
• One or two dots?
Accordingly, you choose one or two wooden pieces from the center and place them in
your enclosure. Then it's the turn of the next player to roll the die except for the
player who is threading at this moment.

End of the game

The game ends as soon as there are no wooden pieces left in the center. Any figures left
in the enclosures cannot be thread. The players place their threaded strings next to each
other. Whoever has the longest chain wins the game. In the case of a draw there are
various winners.
