The Suitcase Detectives
A unique game of close observation for 2-4 detectives ages 5-99. Author: Guido Hoffmann Illustrations: Guido Hoffmann Length of the game: approx. 15 minutes Percy Pilferer is around town. The notorious pickpocket is painting the town red and has not yet been caught in the act. Bingo! He strikes again. What has he stolen this time? At this point the suitcase detectives are called in, up until now they have always managed to resolve every case; but now they need your help. Can you recognize which objects the pickpocket has stolen from the suitcase? Contents 1 suitcase with secret compartment and blue transparency (= game box) 1 game board 4 game figures (in 4 colors) 52 cards (4 different colored decks each with 13 cards) 13 booty objects 1 little bag 1 hour-glass Set of game instructions
Game Idea
Percy Pilferer has stolen two of the 8 objects from the suitcase's secret compartment. The remaining objects are lying all over the place, cluttered together and at times overlapping and they are difficult to see through the blue transparency. The task of the detectives is to make out which objects are missing, and their job is to do so in a very limited time span. The winner is whoever has recognized the most stolen objects at the end of the game.
Preparation of the Game
Take all the material out of the suitcase and place it with the lid closed in the center of the table. Choose any eight objects and put them into the suitcase's secret compartment. The secret compartment is the little drawer that can be seen through the blue transparency and can be pulled out of the back of the suitcase. The remaining five objects are not needed and are put aside. Place the game board next to the suitcase. Each player gets a game figure and places it on the starting square of the game board. Additionally each player gets the deck of cards which corresponds with the color of their game figure. The front of the cards show a person and one of the 13 objects. Each player takes out of his deck the five cards corresponding to the five objects not used in this game and puts them aside. Remaining cards and game figures are not needed for the game. Get the bag and the hour-glass ready next to the suitcase.
How to Play
Play in a clockwise direction. The player who looks the most innocent is the first to play the role of Percy Pilferer. If you cannot agree, the oldest player plays Percy and takes the bag. The other players close their eyes. Percy opens the secret compartment, chooses two of objects and puts them into the bag. Then he yells “Off you go!” and the other players open their eyes. The player to the left of Percy takes the suitcase and shakes it horizontally, without looking inside. Hint: the suitcase should be shaken so that the objects spread out and lie dispersed in the secret compartment. Then the suitcase is placed back on the table. Which objects have been stolen? Percy opens the suitcase and turns the hour-glass round. Now all the players simultaneously try to find out which objects are missing. To do so, they look inside the suitcase trying to make out through the blue transparency the remaining objects. They may not touch the suitcase. From your deck now sort out the cards which correspond to any of the objects you recognize and put them face-down in front of you. Make sure the other players do not see which objects you have recognized. As soon as the hour-glass has slipped through, Percy closes the lid. Now, the other players have to decide on the two objects which they think are missing and place the corresponding cards face-down in front of them. Together all the players then simultaneously uncover these two cards. Percy opens the bag and shows the two stolen objects. For each correct object the players can move their figure one square (=suitcase). The two objects are placed back into the bag. A new round starts and it's the turn of the next player to be Percy Pilferer.
End of the Game
In the case of two or three players, the game ends as soon as each player has been Percy Pilferer three times. In the case of four players the game ends with each player having been Percy twice.
Hints & Tricks
• The game is easier if you put fewer than eight objects into the secret compartment. Professional detectives of course can play with more than eight objects. • Really experienced players can play three rounds per player putting into the suitcase three objects in the first round, two in the second and one in the last round.
