* A truffle is a rare mushroom growing in the earth. Often, special “truffle hogs” are used to search for this valuable mushroom. The truffle has a scent similar to a female pig and guides the truffle hog as he searches.
Aim of the game
Who will be the most skillful hunter, in search of the precious truffles, to solve the most problems, helped by a bit of luck, common sense and a fine nose?
Preparation of the game
• Shuffle the problem cards and put them face down in a pile in the center of the table. • Put the mushroom case (=bottom of game box) in front of the oldest player. Together have a look at the case. There are two compartments: a red and a yellow one. • The mirror is placed on the left hand side of the case. • Cover the 19 mushroom cards and spread them out on the other side of the case. Make sure that the cards are placed near the edge of the table. • Get the pig's nose ready and place the hourglass and the lucky mushroom in the center of the table.
How to play
Play in a clockwise direction. The oldest player starts and puts on the pig's nose. Then they draw the card from the top of the pile of problem cards and place it close to the mirror.
The problem cards: Each problem card shows 4 mush-rooms. The same mushrooms also appear on the 19 mushroom cards. Now, you have to search for the mushroom card matching the problem card and slide it into the yellow compartment of the case.
Time runs out! One player gets the hourglass. They are the truffle snuffle time keeper. The time keeper yells the command: “Truffle snuffle!” and turns the hourglass around. Now you start your search for the mushrooms.
How to collect mushrooms: You may only snuffle for mushroom cards with the pig's nose. If a magnetic mushroom card is touched by the pig's nose, it will stick to the nose. In order to see what kind of mushroom has stuck to your pig's nose, take a look in the mirror. Lean forward over the mirror and look hard to see if you can recognize the shape and color of the mushroom. Compare the mushroom sticking to the pig's nose with the four mushrooms of the problem card next to the mirror: • The mushroom is not shown on your problem card? Let the mushroom slide into the red compartment of the case. • Does the problem card show the mushroom? You have to let the mushroom slide into the yellow compartment. Watch out: A mushroom is shown on two problem cards. If there is a mushroom of one kind already in the yellow compartment, the second one goes into the red compartment! Memorize which mushrooms you have already collected. You may not check the mushrooms once they are in the compartments. How to put the mushrooms in the case: You may not touch the mushroom card! You have to cast them off the pig's nose at the edge of the box so that they fall into the right compartment of the case. • Be careful: A mushroom card lying in the case may not be moved. • If a mushroom falls off next to the case you can collect it with the pig's nose and have another go. • You may use your hands only to hold the box steady or if the pig's nose slips.
The golden truffle: There is a golden truffle amongst the 19 mushroom cards. If luck strikes and you happen to find it, you immediately let it fall into the yellow compartment.
End of the round:
As soon as the hourglass has run through, the time keeper yells “stop!” and your search is over. If there is still a mushroom sticking to your pig's nose, you may not let if fall into the mushroom case.
How scoring is done: • Only the mushrooms in the yellow compartment count. Place them next to your problem card. • If you have collected one or more of the four mushrooms shown on the problem card you place them on the problem card. • If one of them is there twice, only one of them is placed on the problem card. • For each mushroom collected twice or wrongly, one mushroom is taken off the problem card. • As a reward for each mushroom left on your problem card, you may take a problem card from the pile and place it face down in front of you. These are your points. • If no mushroom is left on the problem card or you collected more wrong mushrooms than right ones, you don't get a problem card as a reward. But also, you don't have to turn in any of the problem cards already collected. • Push the problem card which was just played underneath the pile with the problem cards. • Have you collected the golden truffle and placed it in the yellow compartment? Perfect! You can take the lucky mushroom and keep it in front of you. If the lucky mushroom is with another player they have to turn it over to you. So the lucky mushroom can change place various times and be passed from one player to the other during the game. A new round starts: The next player gets the mushroom case, the mirror and the pig's nose. The mushroom cards are shuffled and spread out as described at the beginning of the game. A new truffle snuffling round starts.
End of the game
As soon as each player has set off three times in search of mushrooms, the game ends. • All players count the problem cards they have won. Each card counts one point. • The player who has the lucky mushroom gets an additional point as a reward. The player with the highest score wins the game. In the case of a draw there are various winners.
Truffle snuffling memory variation
The rules of the basic game apply, with the following exceptions: • You have to place the problem card face down in front of you. You can turn it around and look at it only once, after the starting signal is given. • After uncovering the problem card you have to memorize the mushrooms shown and then cover the card again. • Only once the cards are covered again, can you start with the search. • Once the search has started, you may not uncover the problem card again. • Try to remember the mushrooms quickly as time slips by. Who is the truffle snuffle player with the best memory?
